Alumina is extracted from the mineral bauxite using the bayer caustic leach process. The Ciba® ALCLAR® reagents find several applications within the process and are principally used to separate and recover the pregnant sodium aluminate liquors from waste red mud.

Ciba® ALCLAR® flocculants have been specifically developed for the primary settlers and washing stages whilst other ALCLAR® reagents find use as hydrate flocculants and for crystal modification.
